Picking up and playing the guitar for a lifetime is usually a dream of more people of any age than most would care to admit. It's a fact that just about every teenager (boys, though, for the most part) has had an occasional daydream of superstardom gained by playing in the greatest rock band around. And even though most never graduate past the garage, practicing until the fingers bleed sometimes becomes the norm.

The first thing to understand about playing guitar is that if you go with cheap equipment you're going to find yourself frustrated and not even willing to learn the harder techniques of playing. That's why it's always better to find a quality guitar in all circumstances. And if playing an electric version, think about something like an Epiphone electric guitar. Chances are, there's a ton of young men and women out there hoping to become the next rock god or goddess. If the piano is the instrument you want to learn, your instructor will start you out on scales. And for the beginning guitarist, mastering the scales is just as important. When you play the piano, your fingers play notes up and down the keys; in the guitar the fingers move across the strings. If you want to learn chords and start writing your own songs, getting the fingers right is essential.

A fantastic way to begin learning scales is by practicing them on only one string. Try this: press on the 5th fret, then move your fingers down to the 8th fret, strumming the string each time you stop on a fret. Then move back up the frets, still strumming. Once you get the hang of playing the scale on one string, you can gradually advance to playing all six. Much as you did on the first string, play each note between the fifth and eighth frets. Play through this pattern on each string. When you've finished going down the scale on each string, use all four fingers on each string to return to the top.

In order to truly learn guitar scales, you must practice them frequently. After you know the scales, they can serve as a great warm-up tool to get your fingers ready for a lesson or a rehearsal. When you play a note on the string, be sure to press your finger down enough that you don't hear a buzzing sound when you play; if you need to, put your thumb on the guitar necks' backside in order to get to all of the strings.

Also, try to ensure that your wrist is not bent.  A bent wrist makes playing significantly more difficult. Relax your fingers and bend them just a little bit, so that you're ready to perform scales and move your hand up and down the guitar.

During the late nineties, musician, Sarah McLachlan, put together a female-centric summer festival that had the whole world buzzing. Named the Lilith Fair, this music experience was the first of its kind. McLachlan, among others, was sick of the lack of women performers at most summer concerts and so she decided to do something about it. The result was an instant success, which carried on for three years. Now, in the summer of 2010, a revival is underway.

Although the new lineup has yet to be revealed, a list of prior festival acts include Tracy Chapman, Fiona Apple, Joan Osmond and Lisa Loeb. With that kind of star power, it's no wonder the tour was such a success. Current acts that would fit the bill include such newcomers as KT Tunstall and Colbie Caillat. There's no doubt many younger female musicians were influenced by the concert and would be honored to play at the revival.

In prior festivals, there was a real community vibe. People wouldn't just stand there and listen to the music; they'd interact with each other, sometimes performing themselves. It wouldn't have been strange to see someone pull out a Takamine acoustic guitar while a small crowd circled around them. It was this kind of atmosphere that helped spread the word and drew large crowds to the event.

There are a lot negative stereotypes still floating around regarding the tour. Some people called it 'Girlapalooza' and others used even worse names. Since the Newport Folk Festival first began in 1959, it's been the launching pad for a number of now-famous musicians and a fan favorite. Each year, it hosts a number of popular contemporary performers and long standing favorites. Subsequently, it's a very much-desired musical travel destination every summer and should be considered for any folk music fans' scrapbook pages. Here's some advice for visiting this festival that should prove useful.

As far as travel arrangements are concerned, Newport offers a range of accommodations, including hotels and campgrounds. Unfortunately, the Fort Adams State Park, where this festival is held each year, does not offer camping on-site. There is another campground nearby called Melville Ponds that has been reviewed positively.

In terms of parking, there is a low fee for registration ahead of time when tickets are purchased, which will be more if purchased on the date of the Newport Folk festival. Bicycles can also be ridden to the site, but not on the festival area itself. Buses and water shuttles are some other viable alternatives.

Newport makes the following items restricted from being brought into the event: alcohol, pets, glass containers, and, obviously, a/v recording devices. All of these things are usually kept out of large music events, so common sense tells you that officials and security will enforce them. One other interesting item that is banned from the festival is a beach umbrella, which obstructs the view of other concertgoers. However, if the umbrella is medically necessary, authorities will make an exception.

As for recommended items, definitely bring something to protect you from the sun. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat can make life a lot less uncomfortable at the festival. In the middle of the summer, the sun can cause a lot of skin damage. On that note, have a good supply of water with you. Bring some money for the many good food vendors. Clothing should probably be loose, and footwear should be something versatile, like leather brown boots, and will hold up under whatever weather conditions arise.
