How do I gain confidence in my school dance classes?? - Street dance!?
I'm doing dance as part of an enrichment at school. I've done indian- modern/classical (ish) dance for over 10 years now and I've performed almost everywhere - i've taken part in talent shows & other shows where a huge audience is present.
I've joined a new college to do my A-levels, so generally my confidence is low at this new place but i'm pretty sure it'll improve. I decided to take up dance as I wanted to learn different styles rather than stick to what i've always been doing.
My dance class are really lovely, it's just that i have NO confidence what so ever - I think I can be a pretty good at street dance but i feel like i'm being constantly watched since most of them are confident and know their stuff. My 1st lesson which was on wednesday was so awful! usually when i'm nervous I start to under perform and i end up being extremely slow in learning the steps/I asked if i could watch instead of participate because I felt so conscious- and i don't even know why.
How do I gain my confidence in my dance classes? usually when I dance to my usual style it comes out completely natural and I feel i can tackle any style… but now i just feel hopeless I want to carry on taking part in the classes but I don't know how to get rid of this feeling of being so conscious around other people.
Any ideas on what I can do?
I can relate to your problem in a way so I hope my advice helps.
First I never took classes, but at school there was Bboy Club. I would tell everyone how I could do this and do that, and when it was time to show, I would get nervous and back down. Now when some people ask me to show them a quick move or so, I make an excuse because I get nervous…I've also performed at parties and talent show, and will be in a couple months again. Although when I'm put on the spot it makes me nervous, I feel that if I show them "what i got" and I fail they will think im all talk. Although after recording myself I know that I can do good and have no reason to be nervous. Once you know that you can do it, im sure that the nervous factor will decrase because thats how its been for me so far.
Nice to see you trying to learn multiple styles, I started off with breakdancing, then moved onto locking, popping, hiphop, and trying to learn w/e else i can!
Though its funny because I still get a little nervous but I just started little less then a year ago and I want to become a famous choreographer and make a studio to teach others. LOL, big dreams and little time. But with my motivation I know I can do it.

Dance classes are meant to give you more confidence, remember everyone there was also a beginner at some point, and everyone there is also there for the same reason you are, just concentrate, take it all in and give it your dam best and show them that you can do it, your a dancer!
